Sushi Bake Bites

I love cooking and baking at home because frequent Postmates and Uber Eats is not in my spending budget, so why not make food that’s delicious, right? When you’re craving sushi at home, but can’t or don’t want to make an actual roll, this baked sushi recipe is the perfect alternative. The best thing – it’s super easy to make once you have all of the ingredients!

What is sushi bake?

Basically, sushi bake or (baked sushi) is a deconstructed version of the famous Japanese cuisine. Sushi normally comes in rolls where ingredients are wrapped in sushi rice and nori, also known as roasted seaweed, and eaten uncooked. But when you make baked sushi, you layer the ingredients instead of making a roll, and pop them in the oven for a hot meal.

Baked Sushi Recipe

Sushi bake is usually made with crab or salmon as the main ingredient, but you can always switch it up with your favorite seafood or leave it out for a vegetarian option. While most people make sushi bake in a large baking pan, I love using a cupcake pan to make them into crab sushi bake bites.

What ingredients do I need for crab sushi bake?

To make this baked sushi recipe, you’ll need: sushi rice, creamy crab topping, roasted seaweed, sriracha, and furikake.

Sushi rice is made from combining cooked rice with a vinegar/sugar/salt mixture while it’s still hot. To make good sushi rice, here are a few tips:

Sushi Bake

  1. Wash your rice. There’s a lot of starch on rice so washing and rinsing before you cook it helps to prevent it from clumping or having a gummy texture.
  2. Cook your rice in a rice cooker. This is the easiest way to get your rice perfectly cooked! Set it and forget it instead of worrying about it on the stove.
  3. Short-grain Japanese white rice is the best for making sushi rice. But any kind of short-grain or medium-grain rice like Calrose rice works too.

For the sushi bake creamy crab topping, you’ll need cucumber, green onion, imitation crab, cream cheese, mayonnaise, sriracha, and salt to taste. This is where you can also add or substitute cooked real crab or salmon or leave it out altogether.

Sushi Bake Sriracha

If you’re wondering about the last two ingredients on the list, sriracha is a hot sauce made from a smooth paste of chili peppers. You might be familiar with the famous Huy Fong brand that features a rooster on the bottle with a green top, but as you can see from the picture, I love to get mine from Sprouts Farmers Market.

Furikake is a Japanese condiment that is usually sprinkled on rice. It’s made of chopped nori, sesame seeds, and sometimes dried fish. You can use this to kick your white rice up a notch anytime.

Where to buy sushi ingredients

Where can I find crab sushi bake ingredients?

Where to buy sushi ingredients will depend on where you live. If you live somewhere that has Asian markets, these ingredients should be easy to find. A big plus for where to buy sushi ingredients is if your area has a Japanese market – you’ll definitely find everything you need there.

But if you don’t have any Asian markets where you live, big grocery stores with an international section are probably your best bet on where to buy sushi ingredients for this baked sushi recipe.
